Feeling Down? 6 Bits of Advice for Getting Out of a Funk

Life throws curve-balls. Whether you're going through a recent break-up, like so many of my friends right now (for some reason, love isn't in the air), a fruitless job search or general family stress (who doesn't have this?!), we've all been there, and we've all dealt with friends or loved ones going through these things. We seek advice from others to help us stay healthy, look good and have fun; But I think when it comes down to it, it's really about finding what works for you.


People say "It's the little things in life," and I couldn't agree more. These are 6 bits of advice that I have found helpful when I'm feeling down:


1. Drink more water
Aside from the obvious perks of more energy, fewer headaches and an all-around awesome feeling, drinking more water can also do wonders for your skin. Dull and acne-prone skin usually improve quite a bit when you are properly hydrated. It is undoubtedly the most important beauty step. One of many budget-friendly skin tips for the frugal beauty enthusiast. When you feel healthy, you look healthy.

2. Stepping outside of your comfort-zone can be really fun
Sometimes the best moments are the ones that you make happen. You can only experience things if you are willing to take a risk for time to time. Do something out of the ordinary. If you go watch your friends do karaoke every weekend, but you are too afraid to participate... Just do it! You won't regret it. You'll love it if you follow the right karaoke advice!

3. Treat yourself
It's pretty difficult to not feel stressed out, at least sometimes. One way to cut back on stress is to treat yourself every now and then. Buy yourself something delicious or fancy, you deserve it.

4. Try a new look
I'm not talking about anything major, just little things. Try a new hairstyle or makeup trick. Sometimes a little change can make a big difference.

5. Have a daily affirmation
I know it sounds corny, but I actually find it really helpful to have a daily affirmation. Something I can say to myself when I'm feeling down... because sometimes, the only person who can bring you back up is you. I have a few that help me.

6. Find ways to make your workspace fun
Even if that means you have to buy cute little USB hubs that you love for no reason. Make your work space your own. When you feel comfortable, it's much easier to be productive and you'll also feel a little less stressed. There a lot of ways to organize your workspace and make it fun.

4 Crazy Ways to Get Pregnant

If you have baby fever, you've probably gotten some unwanted fertility advice from friends and family. But, I promise, these may be the weirdest fertility remedies you will ever hear... 

1. Eat More Blueberry Jam
: In her quest to get pregnant, a writer in England says she was told that blueberry jam, eaten straight from the jar, can help in the fertility department. If you're shaking your head at this, as I am, wait until you hear what someone in her family told her husband to do: Her husband, she writes,"was accosted by an aging uncle at a family gathering, and told he needed to cover his willy in blueberry jam. 


2. Put Egg Whites Down There:
 When I was trying to get pregnant with my first baby and it didn't happen on the first try, I instantly panicked and read every pregnancy tip I could find. One of them involved putting raw egg whites down there before sex. The idea is the egg whites can act as an artificial cervical lubricant that helps the sperm find it's way to where it needs to be. No, I never tried this, not only because it sounds a little gross and really unhygienic, but also because most fertility experts don't recommend it at all. 


3. Throw Your Underwear on the Roof of Your House: This one's downright bizarre, the Yansi people of Africa's Congo region have a tradition of tossing their underwear on the roof of their houses as a way to boost fertility. To get pregnant, however, you have to climb up and grab your undies on the night of a new moon, according to the legend. 

4. Rub the Belly of a Statue: Ripley's Believe it or Not claims that more than 2,000 women have written them to say that they got pregnant after touching (or, ahem, rubbing) a pair of the company's ancient African fertility statues. Uh huh.

6 Worst Stretching Mistakes

To stretch or not to stretch, that is the question. Well, one of the questions. There's also when to stretch, how to do it, how long to hold each stretch -- you get the picture. When done right, it means longer, relaxed muscles. Done wrong, or not doing it at all, can mean aches, pains, and injuries. 

 To address common mistakes and how to correct them, we to turned to Mike Clark, DPT, Sharecare's chief science officer and CEO of the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Mistake #1: You don't stretch before you work out.
The fix
: You do -- but it's bad to stretch cold muscles. "First, you need to release the muscles so they can be stretched," Clark says. The best way is by using a foam roller (or anything round, like a tennis ball). "It applies deep pressure to the muscle, bringing it back to its normal length," he says, undoing the shortening and tightening that sitting, sleeping and walking around in high heels causes. Roll your calves, outsides of your thighs, upper butt and upper back. 


Mistake #2: To get more out of the stretch, pulse or bounce a bit.
The fix:
 There's a reason basic stretching is known as static stretching -- you're meant to stay still. Why shouldn't you pulse when you stretch? "Everyone has muscle imbalances, which cause scar tissue to form in the muscles," says Clark. "That tissue is like glue. When you bounce, your nervous system makes you go around that scar tissue, so the parts that need to get stretched don't get stretched."


Mistake #3: The longer you hold the stretch the better.
The fix:
 Once you get into that stretch, there's no need to lounge there while watching an entire episode of 30 Rock. "Research says that whether you hold a static stretch for 20, 60 or 90 seconds, the effects are the same," Clark says. Do your 20 seconds, then move on. 


Mistake #4: There's no need to stretch post-workout.
The fix:
 "It's crucial to stretch after your workout, as it makes for better recovery," Clark says. Because you contract your muscles while you exercise, they actually get shorter -- and you need to restore them to their normal length. "Otherwise, they begin to stay tight all the time," Clark says -- and that's a recipe for aches and pains.


Mistake #5: Stretching a couple times a week is plenty.
The fix:
 You sit, sleep and work on your laptop (or do something else similarly body-numbing or repetitive) every day. It follows that you need to stretch every day to counteract those activities and keep your body balanced. "Take what many women go through," Clark says. "Wearing high heels causes tightness in the calves, crossing your legs causes tightness in the abductors, sitting causes tightness in the hips, hunching over your phone while you're texting causes tightness in the fronts of your shoulders and staring at a computer all day makes your neck tight."


Mistake #6: I'm pretty flexible already, so I don't need to stretch.
The fix:
 This brings us back to those muscle imbalances. While you may be able to touch your toes or scratch your own back, other muscles might not be so flexible. "I work with lots of pro athletes and Olympians," says Clark. "Every single one of them can benefit from stretching."

Caffeine Addiction Is a Mental Disorder, Doctors Say

Question: What do heroin addicts who receive a daily dose of methadone have in common with people who feel they cannot function without that morning cup of caffeine?

Answer: They are tending to their addiction—keeping the physical devils of drug withdrawal at bay.

As writer T.R. Reid pointed out in his January 2005 National Geographic article, "Caffeine,"researchers agree that regular caffeine use triggers a physical dependence, a mild form of addiction.

The article describes how some heavy caffeine users grow irritable, get headaches, or feel lethargic when they can't get that coffee, soft drink, energy drink, or cup of tea. (See a photo gallery of the many forms of caffeine.)

But should those effects of caffeine withdrawal be classified as a definite psychological disorder?

Yes, contends Roland Griffiths, a professor of behavioral biology and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Griffiths, who helped review the caffeine article in National Geographic, is a principal author of a comprehensive caffeine-withdrawal study. He hopes the report presents a strong case to include caffeine withdrawal in the next edition of theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Known as the DSM, the manual is published by the American Psychiatric Association. Mental-health practitioners use it to help identify conditions and treatment strategies. The next edition will be published in 2010.

In addition, Griffiths believes that the diagnosis criteria for caffeine withdrawal should be updated in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, a medical manual used by the World Health Organization.

His conclusions are based on a review of more than 170 years' worth of scientific research and published medical observations on the physiological affects of caffeine and its withdrawal symptoms.

The researchers cited 57 experimental studies and 9 survey studies to support their recommendations for including caffeine withdrawal in the DSM. Their study was reported in the October 2004 issue of the journal Psychopharmacology.

"Doctors and other health professionals have had no scientifically based framework for diagnosing the syndrome," said Griffiths, explaining why he undertook the research project.

In an interview, Griffiths said that the studies had demonstrated that people who take in as little as a hundred milligrams of caffeine per day—about the amount in half a cup of coffee—can acquire a physical dependence that would trigger withdrawal symptoms.

"Although most regular caffeine users know that caffeine is a mild stimulant, many are not aware that abrupt cessation can sometimes produce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms," Griffiths said.

The studies suggested five clusters of common withdrawal symptoms:
• Headache
• Fatigue or drowsiness
• Depression or irritability
• Difficulty in concentrating
• Flulike symptoms including nausea, muscle pain, and stiffness

Griffiths said that the studies consistently indicated that at least half of regular caffeine consumers would experience withdrawal symptoms if they abstained. And, he added, that the research showed that symptoms could flare up regardless of what type of caffeine product was used.

"With regard to severity, 13 percent of people had clinically significant distress or functional impairment," Griffiths added. "At its worst, caffeine withdrawal involved missing work, canceling social functions, and going to bed with the belief that they had the flu."

The onset of symptoms, research indicated, occurred within 12 to 24 hours after stopping caffeine intake. Peak unpleasantness occurred within the first two days, but other symptoms could continue for as long as nine days.

An interesting finding of the research, Griffiths said, is that regular caffeine consumers may use it more to stave off withdrawal symptoms than to simply enjoy the product.

13 Ways To Cut Down On Sodium.

It’s a no-brainer for people with high blood pressure to cut down on sodium in their diet. It’s just so hard to do. Sodium tastes so good. That, of course, is why restaurants generally use a good bit of sodium to their food. They’re more interested in you enjoying your meal than living longer because your blood pressure stays in line.

So how can we flavor our foods, and still have it taste good? There is no need to sacrifice flavor when you need to cut down on sodium if you will only follow these 15 suggestions.

1. Even though it is tempting to add salt to pasta or any starchy foods that are topped with other meats or sauces, it is unnecessary. The toppings usually add sufficient flavor. Most people won't even notice that the salt was omitted.

2. Evaluate your salt intake. If the first meal of the day is higher in sodium, then eat lower sodium meals for the remainder of the day. Instead of sprinkling salt directly onto your food, sprinkle it into your hand so you can judge how much you are actually using.

3. You can cut down on salt by taking the salt shaker from your table. In place of the salt, use lemon juice on food instead of salt.

4.If possible, try not to use onion or garlic salt as spices. To create these spices, some onion or garlic has been mixed into salt. Instead, use natural onion or garlic for extra flavor - minus the salt.

5. Refrain from buying packaged box mixes for cakes, pancakes, cornbread, muffins, biscuits, etc. If you prepare your own, you can monitor the ingredients and cut down on salt.

6. Study all labels to decide the level of sodium content. By doing this, you can buy low sodium products whenever feasible. Also, try to refrain from using any products that include sodium as an ingredient. Not easy to do, but necessary.

7. Discover the numerous herbs, spices and fruits which will liven up your food and are easily accessible. Who knows, you may determine to grow your own, or experiment with store purchased herbs to cut down on sodium.

8. Use one of numerous salt free mixtures of herbs and spices that are pre-made for seasonings.

9. Any potassium chloride products should not be used as salt substitutes. They can heighten potassium levels in your body and may even cause heart rhythm abnormalities.

10. To cut down on sodium, marinate food in wine or add wine to Sauces and soups. If you completely cook the food, much of the alcohol will cook off, but the flavor will be enhanced.

11. Use fresh vegetables whenever feasible. Although, if you have to use processed vegetables, wash them in water prior to using. Washing will help take some of the salt out that was added during the processing and canning.

12.Try adding a little oregano, chives, parsley, paprika, red or green pepper. They can add a lot of flavor to a meal yet keep sodium low.

13. Be certain to keep your meals pleasing and incorporate an assortment of colors and textures. Many men and women are more tempted to add salt when the food appears boring.

So how much sodium should a person consume when they are trying to cut down on sodium? A good rule of thumb is under 2400 mg of sodium a day. That is about a teaspoon of salt per day. A two ounce bag of Cheeto's has 590mg. It’s pretty easy to go over the 2400 mg. Of sodium a day rule.

See the love around you and you’ll feel more love within you

There is a Native American tale that tells of a young boy speaking with his grandmother. She tells the boy that she has the spirit of two wolves living and battling inside of her; one his vengeful and unkind, as he sees all the world as a threat, and the other is loving, secure, and nurturing.

The little boy asks his grandmother, “Which one will end up winning?” and the grandmother replies, “Which ever one I feed.”

We all have this pull inside of us: We can either nurture our fears and insecurities, or we can nurture our trust in love, kindness, and acceptance. This is not a new concept.

There is an endless amount of information out there about connecting with your inner self and finding happiness from within.

However, all that information can feel overwhelming and even discouraging. If you’re anything like me, you may find yourself still aching from a broken heart, or beating yourself up for the chocolate-chip cookie you just ate, shortly after reading about finding forgiveness, gratitude, and self-love.

What I realized was missing for me in my quest for self-improvement—and what kept pulling me back to my old, familiar negative thinking, feeding the insecure wolf—was faith.

In order to make the meaningful changes that allow us to release the grasp of our fears and limiting thoughts and beliefs, we have to be willing to believe in the positivity—believe that we deserve to stop beating ourselves up and looking for an external solution to “fix” us.

It’s not enough to just think it. We have to believe it.

The limiting beliefs of our fears are deep-rooted, and so we need to meet them from our gut level. We need to really believe that it’s okay to step out of our darkness and connect with our light instead.

Okay. So, how do we do that?

We need to find evidence of that love around us.

The world we see is a reflection of our inner experience.

When we see love and light, we are connected to love and light inside of us. And conversely, when we see the inadequacies around us, we’ll connect with that inside of ourselves.

Look around you. Where can you find evidence of the light in your life, the light within you?

This concept was never more evident for me than when I had my son. Whenever I veer off course—when my old, familiar, fearful thoughts creep up to tell me how I’m not good enough, I don’t have enough, or how everything is going to fall apart—I think about my son.

When I look at him, I’m able to so clearly see the beauty and the purity of the human soul. He doesn’t have to do anything to prove, or earn, his lovability; I certainly don’t look at him and think, “Gee, if he lost a little weight, I’d love him more,” or “When he meets that financial goal, that’s when I’ll love him.”

These thoughts don’t even cross my mind when I think of him, so why would it seem logical to say them to myself?

We all started out in the same place, with a full capacity for love and loving. We weren’t born into this world with fears of failure, or being emotionally walled off. Children know no limitations until we point them out to them.

There was once a time in your life when your dreams knew no limitations, when you were free to take risks, and even if you fell down, you were able to get back up.

That light is still in you. It doesn’t ever go away; fear just overshadows it. 

Fortunately, fear is a learned response that has built up over time, which means that we can unlearn it!

When we allow ourselves to realize that the fear isn’t real, we get to make a different choice. We can choose to find the love instead—to feed the loving wolf.

I know that when I look at my son and I see that loving energy, it is my loving energy reflecting back at me.

Take a look around. Where do you see your loving reflection shining back at you? What inspires you? Where can you look for a reminder to stay connected to your belief that you deserve a life of love, and that the love and all possibilities are already inside of you?

11 Ways Throwing Out Clutter is Good for Your Health

It's so easy to let things pile up around you. It's hard to take the time to go through your house and make sure everything is clean and clutter-free, especially if you have a number of small people running around breaking stuffs.

Did you know that having extra clutter around your house can cause you stress and actual harm? It's true. There are a number of health benefits related to simplifying your life and reducing the amount of clutter in your life.

 1) Having a clean house means that you can feel a greater sense of peace in your life, as your home is your sanctuary. Everyone needs a place they can go to feel safe at the end of the day - and the extra clutter can prevent that.

 2) Simplifying your life by cutting out the extra stuff - including that pair of pants you haven't worn since the Reagan administration - can allow you to focus upon what's really important: friends, family, living life.

 3) A cluttered home means greater amounts of personal stress you may not even be aware of. Prolonged periods of stress can lead to heart disease, greater risk of emotional instability and mood disorders, and lower energy levels.

 4) When you do a purge of your house, closet, bedroom, it gives you a huge boost of happiness. The more you declutter, the happier you'll begin to feel as you accomplish tasks!

 5) When you donate the items you no longer use to charity, it can make you happier knowing that the items you don't use will be used by someone who needs them.

 6) The less stuff you have around the home, the greater your ability to relax and rejuvenate and get ready to face a new day.

 7) Things like old clothes and stuffed animals can harbor a ton of dust, which can increase the likelihood that you'll get sick. Removing them can reduce how often you catch a bug.

 8) Clutter unfortunately can decrease self-esteem and make you feel overwhelmed as it's a constant reminder of what you need to take care of - and what you haven't done.

 9) A messy house may make you isolate yourself from friends and family, since you're too embarrassed to invite them over. This can increase feelings of loneliness and shame, leading to depression.

 10) Extra clutter can make you feel exhausted because it may feel as though you have no time or energy to clean up after yourself and others.

 11) Excess clutter can keep you in the past, rather than in the moment and looking toward the future.

Ten Signs That You’re Awakening

Isn't it obvious that there is a significant global awakening happening? Just as the Mayans predicted so many years ago, the apocalypse would become apparent in 2012. But many misinterpret the apocalypse to be the end of the world, when in fact it actually means an “un-covering, a revelation of something hidden.”

As many continue to argue the accuracy of the Mayan calendar, it can no longer be argued that a great many people are finally becoming aware of what has been hidden from them for so long. Of course this awakening is not an overnight process. It takes time to peel away the many layers of lies to get to the core of the ultimate truths.

It would be beyond pretentious for us to claim to know all of the secrets of the universe. We don’t. Everyday we are humbled by what we don’t yet know.

However, it is becoming clearer by the day what isn’t true. And by that measure alone, it is possible to determine if you’re one of the people beginning to wake up.

Here are ten signs you may be fully awake:

1. You know there’s no meaningful difference between major political parties 

It’s so easy to get caught up the left-right debate and believe there’s a difference between the two major political parties. However, debate is one thing, while actions are another. By their deeds you shall know them, and it is indisputable that there is no significant difference between political parties when it comes to action on the most important issues. Even hardened ideologues like John Cusack are beginning to wake up.

2. You understand that the Federal Reserve, or international central banking more broadly, is the engine of our economic problems

Debt slavery is the totalitarian force that threatens all of humanity, not some temporary political puppet or some greedy Wall Street trader. When a small group of people have the ability to create wealth out of nothing and charge interest on it, they have the ability to enslave the planet to their ownership despite what type of government a country claims to have.

3. You know that preemptive war is never necessary

When we realize that self-defense is the only acceptable form of violence, then we become awakened human beings. To suggest war because someone is different from you, or they may pose a threat in the future is simply ludicrous. And when did the idea of bombing civilians become humanitarian? No one wants war except for the immoral creeps that benefit from it.

4. You know that you’re being systematically poisoned, how, by whom, and why

Admittedly, there’s a lot to learn in terms of how we are secretly being poisoned. But the fact remains that we are being systematically poisoned, and it is likely for the deliberate purpose of dumbing us down and, ultimately, culling the population. Who could believe anyone is so evil to do that to innocent people, you may ask. Well, once you begin to seek the answer to that question, you’re one step closer to enlightenment.

5. You understand that government can never legislate morality, nor should they

When you realize the role of government is only to protect your liberty and work for the well being of the citizens, you’re awakened. There should be one simple law regulating morality: Do no harm. Thus, it’s impossible for the government to enforce morality with guns, cages, and taxes because those clearly cause severe harm to your liberty and our well-being.

6. You know that the mainstream media is wholly owned and manipulated by the ruling elite

A dwindling number of people still actually believe what they hear coming from the establishment media as if it’s gospel, even when they already accept that they are bought and paid for by the elite controllers. Yet, recognizing that they are nothing more than a propaganda machine and a form of mind control are the first steps in being able to critically think beyond the scientific messaging they broadcast.

7. You know that your neighbors are not your enemy even if you have fierce ideological disagreements

This is perhaps the most difficult thing to overcome in the awakening process. But it’s vital to understand that your neighbors have been indoctrinated and hypnotized like the rest of the us, until someone helps shine a light on inconsistencies in our thoughts and beliefs. Most of their ideas are not their own. They are suffering just like the rest of us. It’s okay to condemn their actions if they’re harmful, but those who are awake will not give up on spreading information that can enlighten those who might still be in the dark. None of us were born “awake” and all of us can learn even more.

8. You know that the endgame is one-world control of planet Earth

Once you understand that the endgame for the ruling elite is to have complete control of all vital facets of society through a global government, one-world currency, international armed forces, and so on, it is simple to see through the lies and propaganda surrounding even the most confusing world events. You will never go back to sleep when you fully accept this reality.

9. You recognize that there are esoteric powers manipulating our physical world

Whether you’re a religious or spiritual person, scientific or just plain curious, there are many theories about an invisible force at play in all of this. Obviously it’s impossible to prove exactly what it is. You may not want to believe it, but the ruling elite takes their occult rituals deadly serious. And they likely know something we don’t. Just by keeping an open mind about this possibility, you’ll forever keep an open mind about the things we can actually see, hear, taste and touch. Current science has shown that we can only “see” what the visible light spectrum reveals, which amounts to the tiniest fraction of all that can theoretically be seen within the full spectrum of energy. Part of any awakening is realizing that there is much more that is possible than impossible.

10. The power to change the world rests with you and you alone

For too long people have believed themselves to be weak, or relied on others to change the world for them. You’ll know that you’re fully awake when you realize that you have infinite power to change the world by simply living the change you want to see. First, you have to identify the principles that you believe in and then go out and live by them. If just a small minority took steps to do this, it would shake the establishment to its core.
