The Health Benefits of Vitamin C

Look at your tongue and you will get a lot of information about your health.   The shape, color, size, and coating variations all tell a story about your health.  


As a Naturopathic Doctor, many have asked why I look at their tongues after I have conducted an Iridology reading.  In this blog entry I will explain this ancient method of analyzing health problems by observing the tongue.


The shape and size of your tongue tells if you are over hydrated or dehydrated.  Too much water and your tongue is puffy.  If your tongue is small, and short you may be deficient in fluids.


The color is also important.  If very red, you have too much heat.  If pale, you are anemic or have a cold coming on.  If it's purple, you have some stagnation in some inner organ.


The color and coatings may vary on different parts of the tongue.  If the tip is red, here is a problem with your heart.  If the sides of the tongue are different, you may have a liver problem. Just  beyond  the tip, your lungs may be acting up.  The center of the tongue tells a story about your stomach or digestion, and the back of the tongue relates to your kidney.


The thickness of a coating tells how severe your illness may be.  A thin coating indicates a mild pathogen; wile a very thick coating implies a deeper problem.


If the coating is dry you need fluids, if it is moist, you may have poor water metabolism.  The color of the coating also tells a story.  If it is white you have a cold condition, if yellow or brown, you have excess heat inside the body.  If gray or black see a doctor soon as you have a serious condition.


Remember drinking red wine, coffee, food dyes, or orange juice can change the appearance of coating on the tongue.  Changes occur slowly unless you have a high fever, cold or flu.


The location of changes tell where in your body you have a problem that needs attention.  For those of you contemplating tongue piercing,you must realize that the underside of the back of the tongue is controlled by the brain.  Piercing may cause emotional changes and depression. 


Most important is the location of some tongue changes.  As the diagram at the top of this blog indicates, you will have a clue as to what part of your body may be having some problems and what holistic method is best to remedy it.

If you are thinking of a tongue piercing, you must note that the underside of the back of the tongue is the location of the brain.  Piercing this spot may cause emotional and depression changes.

10 Foods that Lower Cholesterol

1. Whole grains and oats – a five-year Insulin Resistance Athersclerosis Study showed that people whose diets contain the most whole grains “had the thinnest carotid artery walls and showed the slowest progression in artery wall thickness.”

 2. Blueberries – a compound in blueberries (pterostilbene) may help lower cholesterol as effectively as commercial drugs with fewer side effects.

7. 100% cranberry-grape juice – antioxidants in grape juice slow down LDL cholesterol oxidation, and cranberry juice raises HDL or “good” cholesterol.

9. Pomegranate juice – a National Academy of Sciences study showed that pomegranate juice reduces cholesterol plaque buildup and increases nitric oxide production (nitric oxide helps reduce arterial plaque).

Yogurt with live active cultures (probiotics) – Vicki Koenig, MS, RD, CDN said “several studies have shown that the probiotics Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Reuteri actually help lower cholesterol. They work by preventing the reabsorption of cholesterol back in to the blood stream.”

Research shows that beyond a brief caffeine high, there are actually no health benefits to energy drinks. In fact, the combination of different chemicals is likely to do more harm than good, especially for children.

Some of the unwelcome side effects of the drinks include elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. A recent study by the University of Miami suggests even more serious outcomes, such as heart palpitations, strokes and sudden death.

Listen, I know it’s hard to believe that something that looks like soda could cause any of these symptoms. But let’s look at the facts here: Energy drinks have three to five times the amount of caffeine as regular sodas do. They also include a number of unregulated herbal stimulants and natural blends like taurine, guarana, creatine and B-vitamins.

And a lot of the time, they don’t even bother to list these ingredients on the label.

Does this sound like a product you want your kid guzzling down to get them through the school day? I know we’re all busy, and your child probably has a number of extracurricular activities, tests and projects going on all at once, but energy drinks are not the answer.

The sad thing is that it all boils down to common sense. These products get on the market, and they have flashy colors and cool commercials. The advertisers are specifically targeting kids.

Then, the kids get hurt and everybody wonders: What happened?

What happened was that you have companies that don’t care about children’s health, government regulators that don’t know what they’re doing, people that don’t want to be regulated, and most importantly, the power of the almighty dollar.

From a health care perspective, it has been obvious all along. These things can lead to no good. There certainly haven’t been any studies showing the health benefits of these drinks.
